In 1817, Austrian naturalist Johann Natterer arrived in Brazil as part of the Austrian Scientific Expedition. Over the course of 18 years, he traveled extensively across the country, compiling an extraordinary collection of over 50,000 objects—one of the most significant scientific and ethnographic records of 19th-century Brazil.
